The Humble Pumpkin DIY #2

Oh the joy of the End-Of-The-Year Holidays!!
Yesterday I showed you how to carve a pumpkin with less mess and headache..
Today..
The innards!!!

Look at those seeds!!!
I just knew that I wanted to make pumpkin seeds. I just didn't want to do the old Salt-and-that's-it ones..
I searched the web for some sweet seeds.
Couldn't find what I wanted so I made up a recipe.
 So..
I took the seeds and made sure there wasn't any guts left on them.
I sprayed a 13x9 glass baking dish with oil and tossed them in it.
I threw them in the oven at 350 and let it preheat while they were inside.
What can I say.. I'm a rebel.
While they heated I decided on my spices.
I tossed
2 tbs of pumpkin pie spice
1 tbs of cumin
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tbs butter and
about 2 tbs water
into a stock pot.
Brought it to a boil then let it come together as a glaze.
The seeds took a while. I didn't count minutes. When they were a little brown and didn't taste "raw", I took them out.
I tossed them into the pot with the glaze and coated them.
After that I went ahead and spread them out onto a silicone baking mat to dry.
That was it!
These were perfect for our taste because we don't use much salt in our food. If you're wanting a little sweet/salty combo.. Toss some sea salt in the pot while you're mixing stuff around.
These didn't last long enough to put them into a pretty jar.
My bad ;)

Stay tuned tomorrow for another Humble Pumpkin DIY!!!

The Humble Pumpkin DIY #1

Hey guys!
We got a great, huge, beautiful Pumpkin this weekend and just HAD to play with it!
Ok.. Just kidding.. But if you get the chance.. These Are Amazing...
There it is!
Talk about huge!
Stupid Walmart had a mad sale. I just couldn't walk by and NOT pick the biggest one there!
And Oh did I have plans for this sucker!!!
I'll share with you the first leg of this beauts journey.

I had read recently on a blog (I'm kicking myself for not getting the name :( )
that the easiest way to carve a pumpkin was to remove the bottom.
Yup.
NOT the top.
Removing the bottom ensured that when you placed the candles in, they would be on a steady surface. WAY easier to light.. Just light the candles then place the pumpkin on top..
I was skeptical.
But, she promised no nasty arms to clean up from all the digging around in there, and let's face it.. Pumpkin Arm is a real thing.

But this totally worked!!!
I plopped it down in my kitchen sink and took my big ol knife to it. So easy.
The hole was big enough for me to get all the gunk out and not have one single stringy gut on my arms!!!
I had tons of seeds and hardly any stringy stuff...

This is what it looked like when I stood it up..
You can see my not-so-pretty "F" written on it. Last name Foord.. Decided why not. I don't do scary junk. Halloween is not my favorite, so I decided to go ahead and make this more Fall-Feeling.
Since I'm a huge failure at life Since some of you may make the mistake of cutting a vital piece of your pumpkin off... Don't panic. I totally messed mine up wanted to show you how to fix it.
Toothpicks.
Jam those babies in as far as you can get.. and as many as it takes. Then snip them with scissors.
My sad little F. I'm no artist..
So off we went outside armed with a plate, the pumpkin, three tealights and a lighter.
We made a friend...

We still don't know who this is.. But she was super sweet and Kenny fell in love.
I placed the pumpkin on the plate to make sure it was a perfect fit.
Then I lifted it up and put placed the candles on the plate.
Don't try to light them in the wind. It doesn't work.
Got them lit eventually, and placed the pumpkin on top.

There you have it!!!
My first ever carved pumpkin :)

I just couldn't let the innards go to waste..
Stay tuned to see what we made!!!

 See you tomorrow!!!

The Humble Pumpkin.. A String of DIY :)

It's THAT time of year again!

Walmart made it too easy.
It was lovely and perfect :)
Kenny loved it...

Why are we so insensitive?

I recently read a blog post that touched a nerve.
In it, a young woman was proud of herself for telling off her father.
On his deathbed.
With days to live.

So.
Ok.
She had a hard life... Dad took off and mom passed when she was young.
She became tough and grew a hard shell.. And resented daddy.
Can you blame her?
Probably not. From what I understand, he wasn't that great of a guy.
What do I know.

But she's grown now.
And he's dying. (He has since passed)
And you mean to tell me that in these last few moments of life... You're going to lay this on him?
Folks... She didn't go visit him to tell him...
She didn't like... CALL him.
Nope.
She wrote him a letter.
Sent it to the hospital.
And forced a NURSE TO READ IT TO HIM.
A. Nurse.

Man is dying.
These amazing women who are put through hell as it is already... Let's face it. Nurses have a crap job.
On top of her already awful day...
She has to stand next to a dying FATHER and read a spite filled hate letter about him to him.

This just makes every fiber of my being hurt.

Sure he could have been a bad guy.
Maybe he killed lots of kittens and mugged old ladies...
But death is.
Death is final.
What happens in ten years when she realizes those were the last words he heard?
What happens when she's laying on her own bed, and she looks around to see loved ones and familiar faces??
Faces of love and memories and... Just. People.
People who love her.
Will she stop to feel bad then?
Or will she too be alone in a dark room with machines and a quiet tv.
Waiting.
Knowing she's about to die.
And in walks a nurse with a letter

My bad week.

I'm laying in an uncomfortable bed.
It's 2am.
I'm coming off the hardest week I've had in a very long time, both physically and emotionally.
And I'm smiling.

The little boy laying next to me is snoring.
And it's the sweetest sound in the world.

This truly has been a bad week. I can joke around and say "this Monday sucks" or "I had the worst week ever.." But this week has been it.
Like a bad movie.

I didn't frequent social media.
I didn't open my blog.
I didn't pitch.
I didn't respond to the many company requests in my inbox.
I didn't clean my house.
I didn't iron my husbands clothes.
The list gets longer.
I think my daughter ate cereal for every meal.

Unless you've been there, you just can't understand.

One year ago this week my family lost my cousin.
He died of depression.
That's how I see it anyway.
He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia years ago and every moment of every day was a struggle for him.
A struggle that most will never feel.
A struggle that most think doesn't exist.
He buried himself in music.
He was beyond talented.

Were we close?
The short answer, no.
I'm the oldest grandchild, he was next. I haven't seen him in probably 20 years.
I'll not ever see him again.
That hurts my heart.

He was very talented.
Very handsome.
Very.
Sick is not the word.
He wasn't sick.
If you're sick, doctors will do everything they can to make you "better".
If you're sick you can walk into any hospital in the United States and get care. Even if you have no money.
But there was no runny nose.
No Bug.
Just Max and his own self.
The demons he lived with his entire life.
He woke with them.
He closed his eyes at night to the sounds of them.

Shut your eyes and try to picture it.

I never thought I would have a son.
I never thought I would look into eyes and know what love is.

Kenny was born just months after Max took his own life.

I was embarrassed to be excited.

I was allowed to hold my new son.
To touch his warm skin.
To hear his sweet cry.

While my family was sitting quietly somewhere in the dark. Knowing the boy they brought home all those years ago would not be coming to Christmas dinner.

I'll not ask why.
That's not my place.
God has his reasons.

But there are days when I just can't post my sweet pictures of the love that is my life on my social media.

I'm so worried that pictures of my son will upset my hurting family.

Not the idiots who say I post too much. I couldn't care less about them.

It's the ones who would never tell me to stop.
Never tell me if seeing me and my son make them cry.
It's those who are licking a very much still open wound.

I saw a post this week that I didn't comment on.
My hurting aunt simply wrote to Max that she could still smell his shampoo.

How can you read that and not be affected?
How can you read that and not squeeze your child closer?

Life moves forward.
I think if you're a parent who has lost a child, life doesn't move on. It just moves forward.

I love my family.
I should be more diligent in my prayers for their heart.
Jeremiah 29:11.
That can be a hard verse.
It's my go-to when I can't see the end in sight.

I lay next to my son this morning.
And pray for hearts that need healing.
And I even still trust that God Has A Plan.

I have never been in more pain.

So... You've probably read my breastfeeding brag post. I'm very very happy that we've made it nine months with no problems. Talk about blessed!
I look back on the last nine months with a smile in my heart...
And a massive ache in my boob.
Oh my word.
I think I'm dying.
We woke up on Saturday morning with what I call a "sour" feeling on my right breast. Yeast infection. I knew it before I even rolled out of bed. Then Kenny rolled over and latched on... THAT confirmed it! Whew! What pain!!!
Being the weekend, I just sucked it up.
So much pain. But life goes on.
I called the dr Monday morning and called in my pill.
Then came the lump.
Oh man.
Small at first... Size of a grape maybe.
I rubbed on it to get it to break up... Thought it did.
I guess it just moved.
Because I've got a lump the size of a tennis ball in my shirt.
Y'all.
I never knew boobs could hurt like this.
I have done everything to get this thing to move.
Feeding like crazy.
Scalding hot water for as long as I can stand.
Hearing pad.
Massage.
Nothing is working.
So I just cry when Kenny eats.
Any advice?

Break my heart... Again.

I've always had this very bad habit of putting my full trust in people.
I mean... 100%. All in. Trust you with my life.
And then I wonder why I'm consistently let down.
It's not that I WANT to be hurt... I just feel that it's my job to forgive and forget, and move on... It's God's job to work on the other party.

I have a friend.
I love her as much as my own family.
I adore her family. When I was single we did everything together.
Totally.
I would get up. Drive to her house some mornings.. Drink coffee. Drive back home. Shower.. Head off to work. Leave work. Head to her house. Eat dinner. Watch a movie. Fall asleep on her couch. Wake up at 2 am. Drive home. And repeat the process.
I did this for three years.
We're close.

Then I met my husband.
Of course my spare time changed. He lived about 30 minutes away, so I was almost never at her house anymore.

That's been three years.
She and I don't speak now.
I don't know why.

I have tried countless times to contact her. I gave up right before I found out I was pregnant. Something she has struggled with her whole life, like myself.

The week I delivered I had to contact her. I had gone through my entire pregnancy alone. Something she should have been there for.
I got ahold of her after days of trying.
She was going to come to the hospital.
That was nine months ago.
She's never met my son.
I cry when I think about it.

I contacted her last weekend.
We were going to get together for dinner.
I made a chicken.

I'm still waiting.

I'm not angry.
Not at all.
I love her.

I'm just so sad.
